Exhibit Specialist

Summary

The Exhibit Specialist works with the rest of the exhibit staff to maintain exhibits on the gallery floors to ensure that they are functional, clean, and presentable, based on personal observation, as well as staff and visitor comments; assists in fabrication and deployment of exhibits throughout the Museum.

Salary & Status

$34,000-38,000, non-exempt.

Position Type & Expected Hours of Work

Full-Time, Monday through Friday with the occasional evening and weekend hours required.

Essential Functions

  1. In collaboration with others, turning on exhibits in the morning and turning off the exhibits at closing, assessing the status of each and making appropriate cleaning, adjustments and repairs. 

  2. Works with the exhibits staff to remove damaged exhibits and assist with repair and fabrication. 

  3. Performs daily cleaning of exhibits, including stocking of consumable supplies, keeping loose parts organized and presentable, and checking for any maintenance and repair issues. 

  4. Works with the Exhibits Staff upgrade existing exhibits, with a focus on improving the visitor experience, exhibit robustness and repair time and cost. 

  5. Works collaboratively with entire staff to ensure the highest level of visitor experience. 

  6. Contributes to tracking and managing daily, weekly, monthly schedules for exhibits cleaning and maintenance. 

  7. Other duties as assigned.

Additional Duties

  1. Assists Director of Exhibits in planning the annual departmental budget.

  2. Assists with grant proposal preparation by providing information on topics relating to exhibit media, digital and analog technology design and engineering.

  3. Assists Director of Exhibits in documenting and archiving exhibit plans and designs in a comprehensive catalog.

  4. Participates in the “on duty” staff rotation schedule and museum events as assigned.

  5. Participates as needed in organization-wide events and activities, e.g., setup, cleanup, etc.

Supervisory Responsibility

This role has no direct supervisory reporting relationships.

Work Environment

The work is primarily indoors in a museum environment and will have regular exposure to dust, fumes and chemicals from exhibit materials and will be regularly exposed to moving parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud when constructing or repairing exhibits.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This role is active and requires reaching, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing stairs. In addition, this role requires the ability to climb a ladder, and to bend, kneel and crawl through tight spaces. The employee must regularly lift and/or move items that weigh up to 75 pounds. This role occasionally requires sitting at a desk for extended periods of time and may require extended computer use.

Required Education and Experience

A combination or equivalency of:

  • A degree in science, science education or technology, industrial design, or related field, or comparable work experience.

  • Experience in fabrication with metals, plastics, and wood, and with demonstrated experience with appropriate tools.

-OR-

  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience interactive (hands-on) exhibit work.

-OR-

  • Equivalent combination or education and experience.

  • Understanding of basic STEM educational content.
